Hazrat Maryam (Mary, mother of Jesus)

3-35. (Remember) when the wife of ‘Imrân said: “My Lord! I dedicate to Your service that which is in my womb. Accept it from me; You alone are the Hearer, the Knower.”

3-36. And when she delivered of the child, she said: “My Lord! I have given birth to a female child.” Allah knows best of what she was delivered: the male is not like the female; “and I have named her Mary. Protect her and her descendants from Satan, the outcast.”

3-37. And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance, and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth, and entrusted her to the care of Zachariah. Whenever Zachariah went into the chamber where she was, he found that she had food. He said: “O Mary! Where is this food from?” She answered:“It is from Allah. Allah gives without stint to whom He will.”

(Zachariah, peace be upon him, was the husband of Mary’s aunt. As is explained in the above verse, Zachariah took upon himself the responsibility to be Mary’s guardian. He set aside a special chamber for her, a “mihrab”, a word which ordinarily denotes “a path to war”. Here, however, it signifies a chamber in which one may enter a retreat, to devote oneself to all kinds of prayers and acts of divine remembrance. This mihrab mentioned above has nothing to do with the Mihrab which is a niche let into to qibla wall of mosques where the imam stands and leads the prayers. Every time Zachariah entered Mary’s chamber he saw various kinds of fruits, including some which were out of season at that time. Zachariah was surprised, and asked her who sent them; she answered that she was sustained by her Lord. This is accounted one of her miracles.)

3-42. And when the angels said: “O Mary! Allah has chosen you, and made you pure, and has preferred you above all the women of creation.

3-43. O Mary! “Be obedient to your Lord, prostrate yourself, and bow with those who bow in worship.”

3-44. This is of the tidings hidden, which We reveal to you (O Muhammad). You were not present with them when they cast lots to see which of them should be the guardian of Mary; nor were you present when they argued (concerning this).

(According to the interpreters of the Holy Qur’an, the children of Israel threw their pens into a river to know which one would be the guardian of Mary. They decided that the guardian of Mary would be the man whose pen floated. According to other accounts, arrows were used rather than pens.)

The Birth Of Jesus (Peace Be Upon Him)

3-45. When the angels said: “O Mary! Allah gives the glad tidings of a word from Him, whose name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, illustrious in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those who shall be brought near (to God.) “

(The word ‘Messiah’ is a Hebrew word, denoting “the anointed one”. As one of the names of Jesus, upon whom be peace, it denotes his exalted and honoured status.)

3-46. He will speak to mankind in his cradle and his manhood, and he is of the righteous.

(According to verses 27-33 of Surah Maryam, when Mary gave birth to Jesus, he began to talk in his cradle, announcing that he was a slave and servant of Allah, and a prophet sent by Him with a book.)

3-47. She said: “My Lord! How can I have a child, when no man has touched me?.” He replied: “Such is the will of Allah. He creates what He will. When He decrees a thing, He only says: “Be!” and it is.”

3-48. And He will teach him the Scripture and wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel.

3-49. And will make him a Messenger to the Israelites. He will say: “I bring you a sign from your Lord. From clay, i will make for you the likeness of a bird; I shall breathe into it and by Allah’s leave, it shall become a (living) bird. By Allah’s leave I shall give a sight to the blind, heal the leper, and raise the dead to life. I shall tell you what you eat and what you store up in your houses. Surely, there will be a sign for you, if you are believers.

3-50. (I come) to confirm the Torah that has already been revealed, and to make lawful to you some of the things you were forbidden. I bring a sign to you from your Lord. So fear Him, and obey me.

3-51. Allah is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him. That is the straight path.

(Verse 160 of Surah al-Nisa, verse 146 of the Surah al-An’am, and verse 118 of Surah al-Nahl explain that because of the wrongdoings and cruelty of Jews certain restrictions were placed on them, but with the coming of Jesus some of these were abrogated.)

3-52. But when Jesus become aware of their disbelief he said: “Who will be my helpers in God?” The disciples said: “We will be Allah’s helpers. We believe in Allah; and bear you witness that we have surrendered (ourselves to Him)!

(The word hawari, here translated as “disciple”, came into the Arabic language from Ethiopic, in which language it means “helper”. Thus those who were the companions of the Prophet Jesus, and stood with his call, are known by this title.)

3-53. “Our Lord! We believe in that which You have revealed, and we follow him whom You have sent. Account us among those who witness” (the truth; i.e. the oneness of God, and the truth of the prophets He has sent, including Jesus).

3-54. And they (the disbelievers) schemed, and Allah schemed (against them); and Allah is the best of schemers.

The Ascension of Jesus (Isa) to Allah and the State of the Disbelievers

3-55. (And remember) when Allah said: “O Jesus! I am gathering you and causing you to ascend to Me, and am cleansing you of those who disbelieve, and am setting those who follow you above those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me you will all return, and shall judge between you as to that in which you used to differ.

3-58. (O Muhammad!) This which We recite to you is a revelation and a wise reminder.

3-59. The likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, then He said to him: “Be! and he was.

(Allah created Adam, peace be upon him, from clay without a father and mother; likewise, He created Jesus without a father. This verse demonstrates the power of our Omnipotent Lord, as well as serving as a testimony to Mary’s chastity, and a refutation of those who believe that Jesus has existed from eternity.)

3-60. This is the truth from your Lord, so (O Muhammad!) do not be of those who waver.

3-62. This is the whole truth (about the mother of Jesus). There is no deity but Allah, and He is the Mighty, the Wise.

3-63. And if they turn away, Allah is Aware of the evildoers.

3-64. Say: “O people of the Scripture! Come to an agreement between us and you, that we shall worship none but Allah, that we shall assign no partner to Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords besides Allah. And if they turn away, then say: “Bear witness that we are the surrenders (to Allah).”

4-156. And because of their disbelief and of their speaking against Mary a tremendous calumny.

4-157. And because of their saying: “We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s messenger.” They slew him not,  nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them; and those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof except pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain.

(Allah saved Noah from the flood; Abraham from the fire, Muhammad from the traps of the idolaters, and Jesus from the wickedness of the Jews, who wished to crucify him. It was Judas Iscariot, who sought to betray Jesus, who was arrested instead, and crucified instead of the Prophet Jesus, upon whom be peace.)

4-158. But Allah raised him up to Himself. Allah is Mighty, Wise.

4-159. There is not one of the people of the Scripture but will believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.

(Allah protected His prophet Jesus from the Jews so that they could not slay him, and then raised him to Himself. There are different interpretations about how and when he was raised to Heaven. According to the majority opinion, Allah lifted him up to Heaven, and placed him in a special place there. Before the day of Resurrection, he will return to the world, and the People of the Scripture will believe that he was indeed the prophet of Allah, and they will renounce their disbelief in the final dispensation of Islam. During his second stay on the earth, Jesus (upon whom be peace), will rule the world with the Holy Qur’an. He will put an end to all kinds of superstitions, and will break the cross, forbid the eating of pork, and rectify other violations of the Law which had been introduced by later generations of Christians. It is interesting to note that the doctrine of Jesus’ torture by crucifixion was not accepted by a number of early Christian churches, including the Basilideans and Docetians. Its source is probably to be identified in Greco-Roman ideas of incarnation, blood-sacrifice and redemption, which, although offensive to the Jewish monotheism of the messengers, filtered in during the first few centuries. The Gospel accounts of the supposed crucifixion do not, of course, stand up to historical analysis: their authors are unknown.)

The State of the Believers and the Narration of These Stories to Our Prophet (PBUH)

4-162. But those of them who are firm in knowledge, and the believers, believe in that which is revealed to you, and that which was revealed before you, especially the diligent in prayer and those who pay the Zakât, the believers in Allah and the Last Day. To them We shall bestow a great reward.

4-163. We send revelation upon you, as We sent it upon Noah and the prophets after him, and as We sent revelation upon Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, and as We gave David the Psalms.

(Prophecy is the highest human condition, for the Prophet is a bridge between man and God, who helps the world to recall its primal source and ultimate return. “Revelation” is the condition of contact, vouchsafed by God and not acquired by man, which may be imparted through the intermediary of an angel, or directly from Allah.

The word “tribes” in the above verse means the grandchildren of the prophet Jacob.

As the next verse explains, although Allah has enumerated several of the greatest Prophets sent in former ages, there are many He has not mentioned. According to some accounts, He has sent 124,000 Prophets since the creation of man.)

4-164. And messengers We have mentioned to you before and messengers We have not mentioned to you; and Allah spoke directly with Moses.

4-165. Messengers of good news and warning, in order that mankind might have no argument against Allah after the messengers. And Allah is ever Mighty, Wise.

Allah’s Warning to the People of the Book

4-171. O people of the Scripture! Commit no excess in your religion, nor say nothing but the truth about Allah. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a Messenger of Allah and His Word which He conveyed to Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not “three” Cease! (it is) better for you! Allah is only One God. Far it is removed from His transcendent majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.

(Many Christians have never accepted the theory of pure monotheism advanced by Judaism and Islam, since their love for their messenger, upon whom be peace, caused them to deify him, just as the Romans deified their emperors. Although Jesus, like all the Holy Prophets, brought the message of absolute Divine Unity, later generations of Christians developed a theory of “trinity”. According to this doctrine, God is one, but also three, and one entity of this three has two distinct personalities. He is Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, which are separate entities, but together are not separate but entirely united, just as the human and divine natures of Christ are united but separate. When the trinitarian Christian prays, he can pray to any of these five; or to all together. So the error of the Jews, the Qur’an explains, was excessive formalism, and the error of the Christians, metaphysical confusion and deification of one who never claimed to be God, for only “He is good, Who is in Heaven”. We ask God to preserve us from both extremes.)

4-172. The Messiah will never disdain to be a slave to Allah, nor will the favoured angels. Whoso disdains His service and is proud, all such will He assemble to Him.

5-72. They surely disbelieve who say: “God is the Messiah, the son of Mary.” The Messiah (himself) said: “O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever ascribes partners to Allah, for him Allah has forbidden paradise: His abode is the Fire. For evildoers there will be no helpers.

5-73.  They surely disbelieve who say: “Allah is the third of three; when there is no God save One God.  If they desist not from so saying, a painful doom will fall on those of them who disbelieve.

5-74.  Will they not rather turn to Allah and seek forgiveness of Him? For Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

5-75.  The messiah son of Mary, was no other than a messenger; messengers (the like of whom) had passed away before him. And his mother was a saintly woman. And they both used to eat (earthly) food. See how We make the revelations clear for them, and see how they are turned away!

(The Jews never believed that Jesus was born from a virtuous woman, but slandered her by claiming that she bore an illegitimate child. The Holy Qur’an here shows that the birth of Jesus was miraculous. Mary never claimed that she was the “mother of God”, or that her son was God. She was a pious, virtuous woman. On the other hand, the slander of the Christians is refuted here by pointing out the human nature of the Messiah, for he needed food, which, although the most basic human requirement, is not needed by God, Who cannot be sustained by anything. So God is one; His Message is one; yet how easily does man’s perversity transforms truth into falsehood, and religion into superstition.)

5-76.  Say: “Do you worship in place of Allah that which possesses for you neither harm or benefit? Allah it is who is the Hearer, the Knower.”

The Revelation of Truth About Jesus (Isa) on the Day of Judgment

5-109. In the day when Allah will gather the messengers together and ask: “What was the response you received (from the people you were assigned to teach)? They will say: “We have no knowledge: it is You, only You, who knows in full all that is hidden.”

5-110. Then will Allah say: “O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My Favour to you and to your mother; how I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit (the archangel Gabriel) so that you spoke to mankind in the cradle as in maturity; and how I taught you the Scripture and Wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and how you did shape of clay as it were the likeness of a bird by My permission, and did blow up on it, and it was a bird by My permission, and you did heal him who was born blind, and the leper by My permission; and how you did raise the dead, by My permission; and how I restrained the Children of Israel from (harming) you when you came to them with clear signs, and those of them who disbelieved exclaimed: ‘This is nothing but clear magic.”

5-116. And when Allah said: “O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say to mankind: “Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah?” he said: “Be glorified! It was not mine to say that to which I had no right. If I used to say it, then You knew it. You know what is in my mind and I know not what is in Your mind. Assuredly, You, only You, are the Knower of things hidden.”

About the Disciples (Hawariyyun)

5-111. And when I inspired the disciples, (saying): “Believe in Me and in My messenger” they said: “We believe. Bear witness that we have surrendered (to You as Muslims).”

(The “disciples” (hawariyyun) were the closest followers of Jesus. Like the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad, they believed in Allah and followed the teachings of their master with loyalty, and surrendered themselves to Allah, in the state known in Arabic as İslam: the entire submission to God.)

5-112. When the disciples said: “O Jesus, son of Mary! Is your Lord able to send down for us a table spread with food from heaven?” He said: “Observe your duty to Allah, if you are true believers.”

5-113. They said: “We wish to eat thereof, that we may satisfy our hearts and know that you have spoken truth to us, and that thereof we may be witnesses.”

5-114. Jesus, son of Mary said: “O Allah, our Lord! Send down for us a table spread with food from heaven, that it may be a feast for us, for the first of us and for the last of us, and a sign from You. Give us sustenance, for You are the Best of sustainers.”

112. Al-Ikhlâs (Unity)

In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

  1. Say: “He is Allah, the One!
  2. Allah the eternally Besought of all!
  3. He begat none. Nor was He begotten.
  4. And there is none comparable to Him!”

(Ikhlas means sincerity and commitment, purity in intention. Samad (besought of): Who needs no one but everyone need Him.)
