Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.) said: “Then the earth is a mosque for you, so pray wherever you are at the time of prayer” (Bukhari and Muslim).*
Islam is a religion of simplicity, rationality and practicality. Islam is also a complete way of life that requires a constant devotion and connection with God that can be fostered at anytime and performed almost anywhere. The daily prayers are the greatest way of establishing this tie with our Creator. The above hadith aims to make our lives as easy as possible by granting us permission to pray not only in mosques, but in our homes, offices, workplaces, schools, and even open spaces.
Living in the United States pushes us to pursue these different resources because the designated places for worship are not always immediately available to us. On the bright side, we have seen many examples of working and studying Muslims requesting their needs to be fulfilled by asking for a convenient and suitable place to perform daily prayers from the people in charge. The sample given below, which was submitted by students studying in a library, can be used as a guide for creating such a petition.
The Sample Petition
To Whom It May Concern:
We, the undersigned, are calling for the authority to designate a room for practicing Muslims like ourselves to carry out the five daily obligatory prayers.
Each prayer must be performed and completed within a limited time frame prior to the next prayer. For this, it is important to have a private, clean and quiet space that is available at any time throughout the day.
The lack of a prayer room at this building forces us to leave our work and classrooms to go and find the nearest prayer area for each prayer which takes a considerable amount of time out of our daily lives and responsibilities. On the other hand, having access to a prayer room right here in this building would eliminate all the problems that we encounter and would also ensure the continuity of our studies and jobs.
We humbly ask for your consideration in this request and hope for a favorable decision upon this matter.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
We wish everyone luck with their future petitions and securing safe places to worship.
May Allah (s.w.t.) always grant us success and keep us in his protection and guidance.
